Mastering the Kenya ETA & Mandatory Health Insurance

To our discerning guests planning an exclusive African safari, a private coastal retreat, or a bespoke journey through Kenya, a seamless preparation is vital. Alongside securing your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), Kenya requires a mandatory travel health insurance requirement for international arrivals.

To ensure your transition from check-in to your private charter or luxury lodge is seamless, we have outlined the precise regulations, exemptions, and application steps below.

Applicability and Exemptions

Who Requires Coverage?

The mandatory travel health insurance requirement applies to non-Kenyan travelers entering Kenya for a stay of less than twelve months. Each non-exempt traveler, including minors and dependents, must maintain an individual valid cover.

Exempt Categories

The regulations explicitly exempt the following categories from the mandatory inbound travel health insurance requirement:

  • Kenyan citizens
  • Holders of valid residence status
  • Citizens of East African Community (EAC) Partner States
  • Persons seeking asylum
  • Holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports
  • Members of crew of any ship, aircraft, train, vehicle, or carrier, where they either hold valid health insurance cover provided by their employer or remain within the port of entry for the duration of their stay (crew members relying on employer-provided cover should present proof of that cover on request)
  • Transit passengers who do not seek entry into Kenya.

Important Distinction on ETA Exemptions

Exemption from the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement does not, by itself, confer exemption from the travel health insurance policy. Travelers must verify their specific status under both frameworks prior to departure.

What Luxury Travelers Need to Know About the Policy

  • How much does the Kenya Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance Cost? The standard premium is set at US$44 per traveler with final checkout totals roughly amounting to US$48–$52 inclusive of standard processing and access fees.
  • Can Global Insurance Policies Replace It? Even if you hold comprehensive international or platinum-tier private medical insurance from home, it does not exempt you from this local requirement. You must hold the approved Kenyan inbound policy for entry compliance.

Minimum Coverage Required (US$50,000 total cumulative limit):

  • General Medical Expenses: $20,000
  • Emergency Medical Transportation (Air/Ground): $25,000
  • Repatriation of Remains / Illness: $5,000
  • Mental Health Treatment: $1,000
  • Prescribed Medications: $300

How to Secure Your ETA and Insurance Effortlessly

  1. Integrated Application: When completing your digital ETA application via the official portal ETA KENYA, the system will prompt you to seamlessly add and purchase your mandatory inbound insurance before final submission.
  2. Standalone Advance Purchase: Alternatively, you can secure your policy separately via the eCitizen platform insurance.ecitizen.go.ke. The ETA system will automatically recognize your active policy when tied to your passport details, preventing duplicate charges.
  3. Airlines Verification: International carriers are strictly mandated to verify both your eTA approval and your insurance status at departure check-in. We advise completing these steps at least two weeks prior to departure.
